Editors lament spate of insecurity in Nigeria

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has raised serious concerns about Nigeria’s prevailing insecurity and lawlessness, focusing on the South East region. 

Following their standing committee meeting in Yenagoa, NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Iyobosa Uwugiaren issued a statement addressing the alarming situation.

The NGE emphasized that the primary responsibility of government at all levels is to safeguard the lives and property of citizens, and they pointed out that the current security challenges in some states represent a significant failure in fulfilling this sacred duty.

In their statement, the NGE lamented that the ongoing insecurity has resulted in the tragic loss of countless innocent lives and has severely impacted social activities and the nation’s economy.

The Guild has observed that the insecurity in these areas has led to the needless loss of hundreds of innocent lives, and has adversely affected social activities, as well as the nation’s economy.

“We hope that the security summit, which has been initiated by the governors in the zone slated for Owerri, the Imo State capital, between Thursday, September 28, and Friday, September 29 – expected to feature major stakeholders in the zone, will help to address the issues’’, the statement partly read.

The editors hoped that the forthcoming security summit, scheduled to take place in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, between Thursday, September 28, and Friday, September 29, initiated by the South East governors and featuring key stakeholders, will address these pressing issues.

The NGE emphasized that the security situation in the South East poses a significant threat to the entire nation and called upon the security summit to generate lasting solutions to this menace.

Furthermore, the NGE expressed deep concern over the abduction and tragic killing of Hamisu Danjibga, a reporter with Voice of Nigeria, in Zamfara State, urging all security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The Guild also shared their apprehension regarding the recent capture of 33 individuals, including 24 students from the Federal University, Gusau, underscoring the urgent need for a concerted effort to address these security challenges.
