Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe has expressed his displeasure with Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo’s “highly inadequate tackle” on Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon during their Carabao Cup quarter-final loss at Stamford Bridge.

Caicedo received a yellow card for the late tackle on Gordon just two minutes into the match, which lacked VAR as the system is introduced only from the semi-finals onward in the Carabao Cup.

Gordon was eventually forced to exit the game seven minutes into the second half, contributing to Newcastle’s growing list of absentees. Defender Emil Krafth also had to be substituted at half-time following a challenge by Levi Colwill.

In his post-match press conference after their exit in a penalty shootout, Howe stated, “Emil (Krafth) was too sore to continue – he’s got a nasty gash on his shin which is quite sore at the moment. Anthony’s (Gordon) the same. I thought it was a really poor tackle on him and the type of tackle you don’t want to see taking one of our attacking players out of the game, and again he’s very sore at the minute.”

When asked if Caicedo should have received a red card, Howe, relying on others’ observations as he hadn’t personally witnessed the incident, told Sky Sports, “I’m going on what other people’s opinions are and not mine – I haven’t seen it myself but people are telling me that they think it’s a red card.”
