ECOWAS okays $78m grant to support Nigerian farmers

The Economic Community of West African States has allocated a $78 million training grant to bolster food security in Nigeria by empowering 150 farmers in Bauchi State and the Federal Capital Territory.

ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Mrs. Massandje Toure-Litse, revealed this information at the launch of a poultry workshop for grant beneficiaries in Abuja’s Orozo area.

The beneficiaries of this grant are members of the Community Allied Farmers Association of Nigeria.

Toure-Litse explained that this grant is intended to enhance the capacity of young individuals to participate in agriculture value chains and food production.

Dr. Austine Maduka, Founder/President of COMAFAS, emphasized that the partnership with ECOWAS seeks to educate young farmers about effective strategies for starting and managing production.

He highlighted the partnership’s importance in ensuring a steady supply of meat and other food products while equipping individuals with the skills needed for sustainable poverty reduction.

Out of the 150 beneficiaries, 75 will receive training in poultry farming in the FCT, while the remaining 75 will be trained in fish farming in Bauchi.

Those in the FCT have already received initial support, including 50 birds each, bags of poultry feed, and essential medications to kickstart their farming endeavors.
