President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has forecast that Nigeria will be counted among the world’s five largest economies by 2100, attributing the long-term projection to ongoing economic reforms and Nigeria’s renewed regional leadership under President Bola Tinubu.

Touray’s remarks were delivered on his behalf during the official launch of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card hosted by the Nigeria Immigration Service in Abuja.

He praised Nigeria for reasserting its leadership at a time of significant regional uncertainty, noting that ECOWAS forces had been deployed to Guinea-Bissau to stabilise the political situation and avert potential escalation. He also acknowledged Nigeria’s sustained commitment to advancing peace, security and development across West Africa.

He said, “While I celebrate this historic milestone, I want to particularly express appreciation to the leadership of Nigeria for advancing ECOWAS integration. Despite the security challenges Nigeria is faced with and the loss of lives to terrorism, we continue to see commitment and the willingness to secure the West African region.”

The ECOWAS Commission president added that ECOWAS troops stationed in Guinea-Bissau were actively engaging relevant actors to prevent conflict and maintain stability.

“Our sons and daughters are there to salvage the situation, prevent civil war and secure the future of that country,” he said.
