The Gender-Based Violence Taskforce in Ebonyi State says it documented 367 cases of gender-based violence between January and November, with two of the incidents resulting in death.

The State Coordinator of the taskforce, Faithvin Nwanchor, revealed the figures on Wednesday during an interview in Abakaliki. She said the cases recorded ranged from physical and emotional abuse to threats to life and harmful traditional practices.

Nwanchor said, “We recorded a total of 367 GBV cases from January to November, with two deaths. The cases are sexual and gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices.”

Breakdown of the incidents shows 68 cases of physical assault, 17 sexual assault cases, 94 economic abuse cases, 77 emotional abuse cases, 18 cases linked to inheritance rights, 69 child abuse cases, and 24 cases involving threats to life.

Nwanchor, who also heads the Sexual Assault and GBV Response Department at the Ministry of Justice, said plans were underway to extend awareness and support services to more communities.

She said the taskforce hopes to reach primary and secondary schools and remote areas through new strategies aimed at early reporting and prevention.

Gender-based violence covers any harmful act carried out against someone because of their gender. It remains a major human rights issue linked to inequality and misuse of power.

The taskforce called for more community cooperation to curb rising cases across the state.
