Ebonyi State recorded a total of 1,487 legal cases between 2023 and 2025, according to the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ben Odoh.

Odoh shared this information during a meeting with journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday.

He said 590 were criminal matters, with 122 already concluded and 468 still pending in court.

“For civil cases, we recorded 897. Out of these, we concluded 445, while 452 are still ongoing,” Odoh stated.

The Commissioner also noted that the ministry had made progress under the current administration by creating 26 new laws to promote peace and justice across the state.

According to him, the state government had also improved access to justice by creating better conditions for legal processes to run smoothly.

“Within this period, we have been able to create a Citizens’ Mediation Centre,” he said.

“This centre is exclusively for the indigent persons, who have cases but do not have money to pay lawyers,” Odoh added.

He said that the centre had already handled 86 cases free of charge for people who could not afford legal representation.

Odoh also spoke about the introduction of a Multi-Door Court House system in the state.

“This is for people who can afford lawyers but prefer to resolve their cases outside the normal courtroom process,” he said.

“These are for litigants who do not want their matter to go through the technicalities of litigation.”

In addition, the Attorney-General said the ministry had partnered with the office of the First Lady of Ebonyi State to set up a Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Department. This unit was created to give special attention to cases of abuse and violence, especially those affecting women and children.

Odoh assured the public that the state government remains committed to providing fair and timely justice to all.
