The Department of State Services has paid an extra ₦10 million to a businessman in Jos who was accidentally shot by its operatives in 2016.
A court had earlier ordered the DSS to compensate the victim with ₦10 million, but the DSS Director General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, decided to double the payment as a goodwill gesture.
Aside from the financial compensation, the DSS has also taken responsibility for the victim’s medical care. He has been moved to the agency’s medical facility for treatment to help him regain mobility.
“Apart from the compensation, the victim has been officially integrated into the DSS medical care system to assess his condition and provide necessary treatment,” a DSS source said.
The source added that the agency’s medical team is working to restore function in his affected limbs.
Following Ramadan, the victim is expected to continue treatment at the DSS facility since his current health condition prevents him from fasting.
The businessman expressed his gratitude, saying, “May Allah bless the DSS DG for his kindness. It was my destiny to suffer this accident, but when I reflect on the years of hardship, I can only be grateful to Allah and to everyone who stood by me, including my lawyer.”
His lawyer, Mr. Idris, who handled the case for free, praised the DSS for showing accountability and compassion.
“This is a landmark achievement that strengthens my confidence in the judicial system,” Idris said.
In a letter to the DSS DG, the lawyer commended the agency’s commitment to justice and human dignity. He also expressed hope that this case would serve as a model for better interactions between law enforcement and citizens.
