Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services.
Bawa had been suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu in June following allegations of abuse of office. He was subsequently arrested by the DSS and detained for over 130 days.
According to Daily Trust, top former and serving government functionaries had pleaded with the President to order DSS to release Bawa.
In a statement on Wednesday, DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya confirmed Bawa’s release.
Sources familiar with the development told Daily Trust that top former and serving government functionaries had pleaded with the President to order DSS to release Bawa.
Another source said Bawa was released after the secret police concluded their investigations with him.
Bawa’s house and office had earlier been ransacked by DSS operatives. He also celebrated his last Eid-el-Kabir in DSS custody.
