There is growing discontent among students on the campus of Niger Delta University on Wilberforce Island in Amassoma, Bayelsa State, following the report that the school management has introduced uniforms into its dress code.
The development which was confirmed by close sources indicated that the Bayelsa state-owned University has directed that every student should procure and wear its new uniforms while on campus.
According to SaharaReporters, the directive was issued on Monday by the vice-chancellor of Niger Delta University, Prof. Samuel G. Edoumiekumo in a memo.
The circular further mandated students to buy the uniforms at a cost between N20,000 and N30,000.
Expectedly, the matter has courted a backlash, especially on social media, as many of the disgruntled students have kicked against the new directive.
The students described the development as exploitative and draconian, considering the current deplorable state of the economy.
