Nigerian singer Simi, whose full name is Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, has shared an important message about empowering daughters to be independent.

She believes that girls should learn to take care of themselves instead of relying on men for support.

In a recent online post, Simi emphasized, “Please do not raise your daughters to think that when they grow up, all they have to do is to rely on someone.” She added that it is crucial for women to have their own financial strength, saying, “A woman’s economic power is about protecting herself, fending for herself, and being able to confidently acknowledge that she’s a complete person.”

Simi acknowledged her privilege, stating, “I grew up among people that believed in me, that pushed me, that encouraged me.” She also urged society to help women who have less support: “When you’re in a position to give a deserving woman an opportunity, please give it to her.”

Simi encouraged women to focus on their own dreams, saying, “Please make your dreams about you and not about proving that you don’t need people.” She recognized that sometimes people need support but emphasized, “You’re not going to need anyone as much as you need yourself.”

Nigerians reacted strongly to Simi’s message online. One user, @intimatesbykoko, said, “Greatness isn’t gender based. It’s safe for everyone to depend solely on themselves.” Another user, @bezo.honeybadger, stated, “Nigerian woman really needs to hear this.”

However, some comments showed mixed feelings. @ashad0206 said, “They mother are offline,” while @karenblqk wrote, “Women make your own money, but try as much as possible to be feminine!”

Others defended traditional views, like @wini_poochie, who claimed, “All these feminists keep wondering why men always break up with them.”
