Domestic airlines in Nigeria have refunded more than N1 billion to over 5,000 passengers between April and June 2025.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority shared this in a post on its official X account on Monday, showing that a total of N1.038 billion was paid back to 5,285 passengers during the second quarter of the year.

The NCAA said the refunds are part of efforts to make sure airlines obey passenger protection rules under Nigeria’s civil aviation regulations.

“Between the months of April–June 2025, domestic airlines in Nigeria paid refunds to air passengers as follows: total number of passengers refunded: 5,285. Combined total refunds (in naira): N1,038,505,680.80,” the agency wrote.

The authority also explained that while flight cancellations can entitle passengers to refunds, certain conditions apply under Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.

It added that passengers are only entitled to the next available flight with open seats, not an automatic seat on the next scheduled flight.

The NCAA reminded passengers that if an airline cancels a flight and informs them at least 24 hours before departure, they are not required to go to the airport, and the airline is not obliged to provide assistance.

However, if the cancellation notice comes late and passengers already arrive at the airport, the airline must provide care, including refreshments, accommodation where necessary, and rebooking options.

The NCAA stressed that passengers seeking refunds must first complain formally to the airline. If the issue is not resolved, they can escalate to the NCAA through its official channels.

It also warned that social media posts do not count as official complaints.
