A diver has suffered critical injuries after being attacked by a shark off the coast of Western Australia, authorities said on Saturday.

According to AFP, the man, believed to be in his 30s, was attacked by a 4.5 metre (15 foot) shark near Michaelmas Island, southeast of Perth.

Emergency services said the incident was reported at about 11:25 a.m. local time.

Authorities described the attack as serious, while details about the victim’s condition and treatment were not immediately available.

The incident comes just two weeks after a man was killed in a shark attack in northern Queensland, marking the third fatal shark attack recorded in Australia this year.

Scientists in Australia have suggested that rising ocean temperatures and increasingly crowded coastal waters may be altering shark migration patterns, potentially contributing to a rise in encounters between sharks and humans.
