The newly confirmed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has set up a special committee to spearhead the implementation of State Police and redefine the country’s policing framework.

The eight-member panel was constituted shortly after he assumed office as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, marking the first decisive step toward decentralised law enforcement in Nigeria.

Disu held his inaugural meeting with senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday, following the endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council.

His confirmation paved the way for a formal swearing-in ceremony conducted by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

Addressing top-ranking officers, Disu described leadership as a call to duty rather than a symbol of rank.

He emphasised that professionalism and accountability must now guide police operations across all commands nationwide.

The Inspector-General stressed that authority must be exercised with discipline and restraint.

He warned that human rights violations would no longer be tolerated within the Force.

According to him, all Nigerians must be treated with dignity and fairness, regardless of social or political status.

He added that justice and respect for the rule of law must define policing under his leadership.

As part of his reform drive, Disu announced measures to reinforce internal oversight mechanisms.

He directed that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad operate with greater independence to enhance transparency and discipline within the system.

On the issue of State Police, the IGP maintained that decentralising police responsibilities would empower state and local authorities to play more active roles in protecting their communities.

He observed that security concerns differ across regions and require local involvement for effective resolution.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was appointed chairman of the newly formed eight-man State Police Implementation Committee, which is tasked with developing policy frameworks and operational guidelines for the proposed structure.
