The average price of diesel in Nigeria rose to N1,758.26 per litre in May 2025, according to the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics.
This marks a 25.24 percent increase compared to N1,403.96 recorded in May 2024.
In a statement titled “Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) Price Watch,” the NBS also said there was a 2.08 percent rise in diesel prices between April and May this year. The average price in April 2025 stood at N1,722.45 per litre.
Despite this fuel price surge, the bureau reported that the country’s inflation rate dropped for the second month in a row, settling at 22.97 percent in May 2025. That figure is down from 23.71 percent in April and far below the 33.95 percent recorded in May 2024.
The report also showed wide differences in diesel prices across Nigeria. Benue State had the highest average price at N2,441.46 per litre, followed by Adamawa at N2,350.32 and Plateau at N2,201.52. At the bottom of the list were Ondo at N1,318.40, Kogi at N1,360.00, and Anambra at N1,361.02.
A breakdown by region showed that the North-Central zone, which includes seven states and the Federal Capital Territory, paid the highest average diesel price at N1,920.47 per litre. The South-West zone paid the lowest average of N1,553.19.
In the North-West, diesel sold at an average of N1,769.28. In the North-East, the average was N1,767.21. Residents in the South-East paid about N1,632.33, while the South-South recorded an average of N1,857.19 per litre.
Earlier in April 2025, the diesel price stood at N1,722.45, rising from N1,415.06 in April 2024. States with the highest diesel prices in April were the same as in May: Benue, Adamawa, and Plateau. The states with the lowest prices also remained unchanged—Kogi, Ondo, and Anambra.
