He stood on the pitch to applaud the fans in the Stretford End, picking up a scarf and a shirt. Mourinho may also have been showing a message to journalists, the board and the fans.
He has often left the pitch immediately without thanking the fans, or just giving them a brief show of gratitude. His applause and words, as well as hailing Luke Shaw on the pitch before he went down the tunnel, is a show of composure and calm during a storm at Old Trafford.
