Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a woman for allegedly selling her two-month-old baby for N1.5 million in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Delta, Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday in Asaba.
Edafe said the woman, identified as Ughale, had on December 15 reported at the Ekpan Police Division that her two-month-old baby was snatched during a robbery while she was travelling in a tricycle.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO Ekpan Division, CSP Labe Joseph, immediately mobilised operatives of the division and coordinated a swift search and rescue operation,” he said.
He explained that during investigation, the police noticed gaps and suspicious behaviour in the woman’s account, which led to further questioning.
“During the course of the investigation, inconsistencies and suspicious conduct observed in the complainant’s narrative prompted further interrogation,” Edafe said.
According to the police spokesman, the woman later admitted that the robbery story was false and confessed to selling her baby to two other suspects.
“The complainant subsequently confessed that the report was staged and revealed that she had sold her two-month-old baby to two other suspects for the sum of N1.5 million,” he said.
Edafe added that the suspects involved in the transaction were arrested and the baby was recovered alive.
“The suspects were arrested, and the infant was successfully rescued and is safe,” he said.
He noted that all suspects are currently in police custody, adding that investigation is ongoing to arrest other accomplices and ensure prosecution.
