Delta moves to bar parents from visiting children’s schools
The Delta State Government is considering a bill to prohibit parents from visiting their children’s schools during school hours in response to the recent tragic incident where a teacher was allegedly killed by a parent.
The Chief Inspector of Education for Ika South Local Government Area, Mrs. O.M. Olushola, made this announcement during a special edition of the Parents and Teachers Association meeting held at Alihame Mixed Secondary School on Wednesday.
The meeting aimed to address parents regarding the code of conduct, especially in light of the unfortunate death of a teacher at the school a few weeks ago, allegedly killed by a parent.
Mrs. Olushola emphasized that teachers are not monsters but parents trained to care for students under their custody from 7:30 am to 2 pm.
She shared, “I want to let you know that a bill is already in the Delta State House of Assembly to prohibit parents from coming to school during school hours. Even when a parent has a genuine report against a teacher, the report should be directed to the principal of the school as a matter of due process.”
She reassured parents that the state government is taking steps to support the family of the deceased teacher and urged parents to assist the family in the interim.
Isaac Arimokwu, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, emphasized that teachers are well-trained to take care of children under their custody, urging parents to allow them to do their work.
He added, “There is no punitive measure in education that is designed to kill any child but to improve them, calling on parents to be mindful of how they react to reports brought to them by their children about their teachers.”
During the PTA meeting, the school’s principal, Mr. Cletus Ujedibie, expressed the lessons learned from the tragic event and encouraged teachers not to be demoralized. He described the teacher’s death as an unfortunate event and prayed that such incidents would never happen again.
The meeting concluded with all parents signing an agreement pledging that any parent found fighting a teacher would be arrested along with their child and handed over to the police or any other law enforcement agency for prosecution.
