The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old man, Daniel Onyejekwe, for allegedly stabbing his neighbor, identified simply as Christian, to death during a heated argument over rice.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Day in the Ogwanja area of Sapele, Delta State.

Eyewitnesses reported that the altercation began while rice was being shared along Boyo Road in Ogwanja. An argument between Onyejekwe and Christian quickly escalated into a physical fight.

“Christian and Daniel started dragging the rice, and during the fight, Daniel picked a bottle and stabbed Christian multiple times,” one witness said, speaking anonymously.

Local vigilantes rushed Christian to a nearby hospital, but he was confirmed dead on arrival.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest and provided details of the case.

“It is confirmed, and the suspect is in custody. The two were fighting and injured themselves badly. Unfortunately, one, Christian, died,” Edafe said.

The police have deposited Christian’s body at a mortuary and have begun an investigation into the incident. SP Edafe assured residents that justice would be served.

“The suspect will be prosecuted after the investigation is concluded,” he stated.
