Enrollees of the Delta State Health Insurance Scheme have raised concerns over alleged illegal charges by health officials, despite their enrollment in the state-sponsored program.
According to the PUNCH, this issue was brought to light by President of the Urhobo Women Wing, Mrs. Rose, during a weekend event where health insurance cards were distributed to 300 indigent Urhobo women.
The health insurance cards were provided by philanthropist Chief John Nani and were distributed on Saturday at the Urhobo Cultural Centre in Okere.
During the event, Mrs. Rose urged Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission, to address the issue of unauthorized fees being charged to insurance enrollees at state hospitals.
“Please, Dr. Akpoveta, help us convey this message to the hospital staff to stop such charges, especially when we already have our health insurance cards,” Mrs. Rose appealed.
Despite these complaints, the Delta State Contributory Health Commission has been commended for its efforts in expanding healthcare access.
Dr. Akpoveta praised Chief Nani for his philanthropic gesture, which aims to support the state’s goal of achieving universal health coverage by 2030, as set by the United Nations.
“We are here today to launch the registration of 300 indigent and vulnerable members from the 24 kingdoms of the Urhobo nation, thanks to the generosity of Chief John Nani,” said Dr. Akpoveta.
He highlighted the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, which allows well-off individuals to sponsor health insurance premiums for vulnerable residents.
While acknowledging the success of the scheme, Dr. Akpoveta admitted that complaints were not uncommon given the large number of people accessing health services.
“If 600 people are using the health centers, it’s inevitable that there will be some complaints. However, we will take this as a challenge and work to resolve these issues. Our services remain free as long as you are registered under the scheme,” he assured.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was also commended for his role in the health initiative, which aims to improve the quality of life for residents across Delta State.
