At least five people lost their lives, and properties were destroyed on Sunday afternoon when a petrol tanker lost control and exploded in Agbor, Delta State.

Delta State Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, visited the scene of the explosion on Monday to assess the damage and express the government’s sympathy.

Describing the incident as tragic, Onyeme assured the affected individuals and families of the government’s full support.

He said, “His Excellency sympathizes with the entire Ika community, especially the victims and their families. The government is prepared to assist those still in the hospital and address the damages caused.”

Onyeme promised compensation for the victims and pledged that the government would carry out repairs on the affected area. “We will assess the physical infrastructure, the extent of damage, and ensure the government reduces the negative impact on the businesses and lives affected,” he added.

The deputy governor also visited the family of one of the victims, Deborah Adomgbor, to offer condolences. He expressed sorrow over the tragedy, especially coming during the New Year. “We are deeply pained by this unfortunate event. While it was an accident, we will do everything within our power to help reduce the hardship faced by those impacted,” Onyeme said.

Onyeme disclosed that a team of experts is already evaluating the situation and will report their findings to the government. This will guide further steps to provide support and prevent future occurrences.

The deputy governor commended the quick response from emergency workers and the public, which helped to extinguish the fire. He urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety to prevent similar incidents.
