Delta governor rejects Amotekun, donates 35 vehicles to security agencies

The Chairman, South-South Governor’s Forum and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa has said that the region does not need Amotekun to secure its environment.

Okowa who stated this on Monday while handing-over 35 security vans to the security agencies in the state, said that federal government has not come out to make a clear statement on the security of the nation and direction to go.

He said,

“You know that for past years, we are having National security challenges and Delta state has got its share of it but we are doing everything possible to enable us have peace in the state.

“We don’t need Amotukun for us to get things done in our zone. We are already meeting with council chairmen in the state to improve on what we have and strengthen our vigilante.

“As the years go by, most of the vehicles they have begun to worn out, so, we have begun the process of replacement and improving their ability to move from one point to another. For a start, we are handing-over 35 pick-up vans today (Monday).

“I do know that we are having a herders/farmers clashes, kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism. And I’m aware that some states have vigilante outfit or neighbourhood watch, very soon south south governors will meet to discuss a whole lot issues both security and economic matter for the unity and peace of the zone but we don’t need Amotekun before we get things done.”

Okowa disclosed that governors of south south region will soon meet to discuss a lot of issues, noting that the importance of the region cannot be overemphasize considering its contribution to the nation’s economy.

He stressed that there was need for the state to partner with the security agencies and share intelligence gathering with a view to achieving a desirable goal by securing the people and property in the state.
