Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has sworn in 25 newly elected local government chairmen and vice chairmen.

The event took place in Asaba, the state capital, where the governor urged the leaders to focus on important infrastructure projects.

During the ceremony, Oborevwori stressed the need for fiscal discipline and careful management of resources. He said, “You must shun wasteful spending and extravagant lifestyles.” He also highlighted the importance of addressing issues like insecurity, poverty, and environmental problems in their areas.

Oborevwori advised the chairmen to stay close to the people by working from their local headquarters instead of managing from afar. He stated, “I urge you to give preference to the needs and aspirations of your people.”

He encouraged the new chairmen to improve environmental sanitation in their communities, saying, “Our urban centers are riddled with filth due to improper waste disposal.”

The governor also welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, emphasizing that the Delta State government has never tampered with local government funds. He assured that allocations to the councils have been maintained.

While discussing the importance of collaboration, he said, “Your success will depend on your ability to work seamlessly with your Vice Chairmen and other stakeholders.”

In response, Innocent Esewezie, the Chairman of Oshimili North Local Government Council, thanked the governor and the Peoples Democratic Party for the opportunity to serve. He promised to uphold the trust placed in them by the electorate.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the governor’s wife and other top officials.
