The President of the Ijaw National Congress, Prof. Okaba Benjamin, has weighed in on growing speculations surrounding the possible defection of suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to the All Progressives Congress.

Speaking on Thursday, Benjamin stated that there is nothing wrong if Fubara decides to switch political allegiance.

According to him, party defection has become a common occurrence in Nigeria’s political landscape, emphasizing that such moves are no longer considered unusual by the public.

“If a former Vice presidential candidate defects, what’s wrong about Fubara defecting to APC? There is nothing wrong about that,” he said during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.

Benjamin’s comments follow Fubara’s recent visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, where he reportedly sought reconciliation with two APC governors. Fubara, who is currently under a six-month suspension due to the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, also met with President Bola Tinubu for the second time in just a few days.

During the interview, Benjamin argued that Nigeria does not have true political parties, but rather “platforms” used for political advancement
