Nigerian singer D’banj has made history as the first Nigerian entertainer to ring the closing bell at the London Stock Exchange. This marks another international milestone in his music career.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the singer, whose real name is Oladapo Oyebanjo, announced the achievement in a post shared on his verified X account on Friday.
D’banj said he took part in the ceremony as part of activities celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Royal African Society. This society is one of the United Kingdom’s oldest organisations focused on promoting knowledge and engagement with Africa.
The singer described the D’banj London Stock Exchange appearance as a historic moment. He shared photographs from the ceremony with his followers.
“On Wednesday, 22nd of July, history was made. I was invited to the London Stock Exchange to ring the closing bell as we celebrate the 125 years of the Royal African Society,” he wrote.
D’banj shares platform with African leaders
The “Fall in Love” singer said he shared the occasion with several prominent figures, including the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Michael Drew.
Also present was former President of the African Export-Import Bank and second patron of the Royal African Society, Benedict Oramah.
D’banj expressed gratitude for the opportunity and celebrated the significance of representing Nigeria and African entertainment at the event.
“I must greet you all specially and powerfully,” he added.
The London Stock Exchange regularly holds market opening and closing bell ceremonies to recognise major corporate milestones, new listings, anniversaries and achievements by organisations and institutions.
The ceremonies often bring together business executives, policymakers, cultural figures and representatives of organisations being honoured.
