Nigerian singer D’Banj has revealed that the breakup of Mo’Hits Records was entirely initiated by his former partner, Don Jazzy.
The split, which came as a surprise to fans and the music industry, was not D’Banj’s decision.
In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye, D’Banj explained that it was Don Jazzy who decided they should part ways, a move that ultimately allowed the two to maintain a cordial relationship afterward.
Following the separation, Don Jazzy handed over full ownership of D’Banj’s music catalog, including several unreleased tracks.
“This ensured that D’Banj could continue his career without interruptions and maintain control over his creative work,” the singer noted.
The duo’s final major hit together, Oliver Twist, marked the conclusion of their partnership. D’Banj described the song as a way to leave a lasting imprint on the global music scene before moving forward independently.
He said: “It didn’t come from me, the idea to go our separate ways didn’t come from me, it came from Don Jazzy 100%. That’s why we’re still cool, and that’s why he gave me 100 percent of my catalog, even 10 other songs I haven’t released. It’s not about the record label for me, it’s about the movement and future.
“For me personally, even though it was a journey and he had his opinions, I knew that we needed to cement that global movement, and I’m glad that, in the end, God still made it happen for us.”
Mo’Hits Records, co-founded by D’Banj and Don Jazzy, played a pivotal role in shaping the Nigerian music landscape.
The label produced numerous hits and helped launch the careers of artists including Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince.
After leaving Mo’Hits, Don Jazzy established Mavin Records, where he continued to cultivate new talent such as Tiwa Savage, Rema, and Ayra Starr, sustaining his impact on the Nigerian music industry.
