The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has revealed that Lagos State has enhanced security measures against robbery which stemmed from the support from the state government.
Egbetokun made this statement during the 18th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security, organized by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, on Thursday.
“There was a time that armed robbery and bank robbery were common in Lagos, but I can recall that since 2007 till date, only one bank robbery succeeded in Lagos, and that was as far back as 2014,” Egbetokun said. “The days of armed robbery and bank robbery are gone.”
He also acknowledged the significant contributions of the Lagos State Government in strengthening police operations. “Without the assistance that the police receive from the government, we would have been overwhelmed with insecurity in Lagos State,” he added.
Egbetokun emphasized that Lagos, being Nigeria’s economic hub, faces unique security challenges due to the daily influx of people. He highlighted the importance of continuously adapting and improving security strategies to address these challenges.
At the event, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu donated over 250 brand-new patrol vehicles, protective gear, communication gadgets, and other hardware to the police to enhance their operations.
Sanwo-Olu, in his remarks, emphasized the importance of technology in addressing security and traffic issues in the state. “Lagos is now properly mapped, and drone technology will be deployed at appropriate levels to ensure effective monitoring of waterways and densely populated areas,” he said.
He added that the state’s Emergency Geographic Information System (EGIS) has almost been completed, enabling authorities to monitor activities remotely and respond promptly.
The IGP praised these efforts, describing them as crucial in maintaining law and order in Lagos State.
