Renowned Afrobeats artist Davido who recently secured three Grammy nominations in the upcoming Grammy Awards expressed joy in global recognition of Afrobeat.
Davido who got a historic nod for the inaugural Best African Performance category made his views known in an interview with TMZ on Monday in New York City.
His album “Timeless,” earned two additional Grammy nominations for Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance.
The “Unavailable” singer expressed joy in his Grammy nomination stating, “It’s my first time being nominated, It is special to me because it’s also the first time African music is being recognized with our own category, normally we are always in the global category but to have our own category it’s so exciting”
Davido, nominated alongside respected musicians such as Asake, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, and Tyla, emphasized the hard work they all put into their craft.
Celebrating more recent joys, Davido and his wife Chioma welcomed twins last month, a boy and a girl. He shared that their hands have been full of caring for the new blessings.
When asked about the evolving definition of Afrobeats, Davido clarified that the term originates from the sounds of the late legendary composer Fela Kuti.
He explained that while he and other artists of Nigerian descent create R&B music, they often get categorized differently simply because of their African roots.
