Real Madrid defender David Alaba has undergone successful surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained during the team’s 4-1 victory over Villarreal on Sunday.
The 31-year-old, who was substituted in the 35th minute of the match, ruptured the ACL in his left knee.
A club statement had previously confirmed the diagnosis and estimated an eight-month absence, raising questions about his participation in the upcoming European Championships with Austria.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Real Madrid provided an update on Alaba’s condition: “Our player David Alaba underwent successful surgery today for a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee under the supervision of the Real Madrid medical services. Alaba will begin his recovery process in the coming days.”
With uncertainty surrounding Alaba’s return, reports suggest that Real Madrid is considering signing a defensive replacement during the January transfer window.
Alaba has played in 16 matches across various competitions this season, contributing two assists. Real Madrid is scheduled to play their next match away against Alaves on Thursday.
