A Dangote Cement truck has crushed five people to death at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, according to The PUNCH report.
The spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident on Saturday, saying it occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
According to him, the Dangote truck lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle conveying the victims.
“The accident involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with number plate GRZ 767 XA. The tricycle was conveying five people. The five people died on the spot.
“According to an eyewitness, the truck lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle, but unfortunately the driver was not observant that he had collided with the tricycle until its tyre crushed the tricycle and the passengers,” Akinbiyi said.
He explained that the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional TRACE Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue team to the scene but were almost attacked by angry residents. The intervention of the Amotekun Corps, he said, calmed the situation.
The remains of the victims were later taken to the morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
This is not the first time a Dangote truck has been involved in a fatal accident.
In November 2024, a multiple crash involving a Dangote truck in Lagos and Ogun claimed four lives and left seven others injured after the vehicle suffered brake failure.
Also in June 2021, a Dangote truck in Ogun State crushed a commercial motorbike rider and a passenger, sparking a mob attack that led to the truck being set ablaze.
Most recently, Big Brother Naija reality star Phyna clashed with the Dangote Group after one of its trucks ran over her sister, who later died from the injuries.
