Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied reports claiming it imported petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, saying the claims were false and misleading.
An online platform, Sahara Reporters, had alleged that the refinery imported high-sulphur petrol from the United Kingdom on a vessel named MT Clearocean Mary. The report claimed the vessel was expected to arrive at the refinery’s offshore facility on October 9 with about 37,000 metric tonnes of petrol containing 690 parts per million of sulphur.
Reacting to the claim on Friday, the refinery said the cargo mentioned was not finished petrol but an intermediate feedstock, which would undergo further refining before being released into the market.
“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol,” the refinery said in a statement. “The feedstock will be fully refined in our processing units to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.”
The company, which operates within a Free Trade Zone, also explained that it produces and sells only fuels that comply with all regulatory standards. It added that its export products are already being supplied to the United States and Europe, showing compliance with strict international fuel requirements.
Dangote Refinery further stated that all feedstocks brought into its facility come with quality certificates, which are shared with relevant regulators.
“We are also willing to make these documents available to the public in the interest of full transparency and accountability,” the statement added.
The refinery restated its commitment to promoting Nigeria’s energy self-sufficiency while ensuring global best practices and delivering cleaner, high-quality fuels for both local and foreign markets.
