The Dangote Refinery, boasting a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and recognized as the world’s largest single-train refinery in Lekki, Lagos, officially commenced production on Friday.

The commencement follows the delivery of six million barrels of crude oil from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, marking a crucial step towards the nation’s aspiration to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.

A company official confirmed the that Refinery started production on Friday, January 12, 2024 after receiving a substantial crude oil supply this week.

Despite the initial target for commencement being June 2023, the refinery received its inaugural crude deliveries late last year, signaling significant progress in the megaproject.

The first phase of production will prioritize diesel and aviation fuel, with subsequent phases targeting the production of petrol.

Nigeria, despite being one of Africa’s largest oil producers, heavily relies on imported fuel and diesel due to insufficient refining capacity.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery aims to meet 100% of Nigeria’s refined product requirements and generate surpluses for export.

Originally slated to open in 2021, the refinery was officially inaugurated by then-President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

As the Dangote refinery begins production, the Port Harcourt refinery is also anticipated to commence operations
