A staff member of Dangote Cement Industry, Taoreed Okanlawon, tragically lost his life after being run over by a company bus in a road accident on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the early hours along the Dangote Roundabout in the Ibese area of Yewa North Local Government, Ogun State.
Eyewitnesses reported that Okanlawon was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle when the driver hit a speed bump, causing him to fall and collide with the front tyre of a moving Dangote staff bus.
“An employee of Dangote died this morning. He was on a motorcycle when the motorcycle ran into a speed bump and he fell into the tyre of a Dangote staff bus. The bus ran over him and he died immediately,” the witness said.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, disclosed that the driver of the staff bus fled the scene after the accident.
She detailed, “The incident involved a Dangote staff bus from the Agrosac Packaging Department, bearing the registration number Lagos MUS 53 XS, driven by an unidentified driver who fled the scene.
“The second vehicle involved was a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle ridden by Achile Ejigho, a male staff member of the Mines Department at Dangote Cement Company, with a passenger, Taoreed Okanlawon, also of the same department.”
According to Odutola, the accident occurred when the motorcyclist attempted to overtake the bus but lost control after hitting a pothole, leading to a collision with the bus’ front tyre.
The impact resulted in Okanlawon’s immediate death as the bus ran over him.
Following the incident, Okanlawon’s body was transported to the state hospital mortuary in Ilaro for an autopsy.
The injured motorcyclist, Achile Ejigho, sustained severe injuries and was taken to Jajo Hospital Dangote, where he is receiving treatment. He is reportedly responding well to medical care.
Odutola confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.
Meanwhile, efforts to get an official comment from Dangote Cement Industry’s spokesperson, Tony Chiejina, were unsuccessful.
Chiejina directed inquiries to his colleague, Francis Browne, who had not responded as of the time of filing this report.
