The Dangote Cement Plant in Ibese, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, has awarded scholarships worth N16,215,000 to 120 indigent students.

This was part of the activities to celebrate its 2024 Community Day.

Speaking at the event, themed “Celebrating Resilience through Effective Partnership”, the Plant Manager, Mr. Roy Uttam, highlighted the company’s dedication to supporting its 16 host communities. He described the communities as key partners in driving economic prosperity for national development.

Uttam explained that the scholarships were part of the company’s social investment projects for the year. He also announced the distribution of 55 chest freezers to vulnerable women to help them start or grow their businesses.

“We’ve embarked on 25 community projects this year, including the renovation of health centers, provision of solar-powered boreholes, electricity projects, and various empowerment programs for youth and women,” he said.

Uttam further noted that 30 youths trained in shoe and leather bag making were equipped with starter packs earlier in the year. Another set of 30 youths is currently undergoing training in POP, screeding, and painting.

While acknowledging the challenges posed by inflation, which delayed the completion of some projects, Uttam assured the communities that the company was committed to finishing the remaining projects next year.

The Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Adebola Sofela, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olu Aikulola, commended Dangote Cement for its interventions that have complemented government efforts to improve the lives of rural dwellers. Sofela urged the company to align its projects with the needs of the communities.

Traditional rulers from the host communities also expressed their appreciation. Speaking on their behalf, the Aboro of Iboro, Oba Daniel Salako, praised the company for its contributions to community development.

He encouraged Dangote Cement to continue its support while urging community members to cooperate with the company for mutual benefits.
