No fewer than 50 Nigerians have been arrested by Ghanian police intelligence directorate for engaging in internet fraud and armed robberies.

Linda Tenyah-Ayetttey reports that the suspects who were arrested at Kasoa and its environs had in their possession 46 laptops, mobile phones and several electronic gadgets.

Reports said the security personnel conducted the operation based on intelligence reports received from residents, who complained about the rise in criminal activities in the area.

The suspects, comprising 49 men and a female, reportedly rented several apartments in the area to carry out their illicit businesses.

The Director-General in-charge of the Police Intelligence Directorate, Commissioner of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who spoke with journalists said officers from the unit carried out the operation in the said areas at Gomoa Budumburam around 9.00am.

He said about 20 suspects were rounded up in the first apartment, which is a two-bedroom facility. He said most of the suspects were busy on their laptops while the others were sleeping when personnel stormed the apartment.

The police commissioner further stated that the exhibits recovered from the suspects would be forwarded to the Cyber Crime Unit of the Police CID for further investigations.

COP Yohuno said,

“We are currently screening them for varying criminal offences, including cyber-related crimes and robberies after which they would be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for residence status investigations.”

The COP Yohuno said those found culpable after investigations would be arraigned before a court while the ones with illegal migration status would be repatriated to their country.

He also revealed that 21 out of the 46 suspected Nigerians raided in a similar exercise two weeks ago at Amanfrom are to be repatriated by the Ghana Immigration Service for illegal immigration.

He confirmed that criminal activities in Kasoa and environs reduced drastically after the first operation by the police two weeks ago. He vowed to continue the exercise until criminals are gotten rid off.
