The Nigeria Customs Service in Ogun 1 Area Command has urged Nigerians to stop using second-hand tyres, commonly known as ‘tokunbo tyres,’ to reduce road accidents.

The command’s Comptroller, Mr. James Ojo, gave this advice while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Ota, Ogun.

Ojo explained that using these second-hand tyres is a major cause of road crashes in both the state and the country.

“The use of such tyres is one of the factors contributing to road crashes in the state and Nigeria at large,” Ojo said.

He advised the public to buy new tyres instead of used ones, as new tyres are safer and last longer on the road.

“Though everyone understands the current economic situation in the country, it is important for people to do the right thing to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” he emphasized.

Ojo highlighted the dangers of using tokunbo tyres: “These pneumatic tyres, popularly known as tokunbo tyres, are deemed unsuitable for our highways because a significant number of them have exceeded their recommended lifespan from their manufacturing dates. Any usage beyond this duration can pose a significant risk to motorists and put their lives in jeopardy.”

He reiterated the NCS’s commitment to protecting the local economy, ensuring road safety, and upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders.

“We are dedicated to protecting our local economy and safety on the roads as well as upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders,” Ojo added.
