The Nigeria Customs Service has initiated an investigation into a bribery incident involving one of its officers at Murtala Mohammed International Airport.

The investigation follows the circulation of a viral video showing the yet-to-be-identified Customs Officer soliciting a bribe from a Nigerian passenger.

In a statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS expressed its commitment to ensuring full accountability in response to the officer’s unprofessional conduct.

Maiwada clarified the location of the incident, stating, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident transpired at New Terminal, within the departure hall of Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos, and was captured on video by the involved passenger.”

The statement continued, “The recording reveals an inappropriate request for ₦5000 in exchange for expeditious processing of customs procedures. We wish to confirm that the officer implicated is indeed a member of the Nigeria Customs Service, properly assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command.”

Condemning the officer’s behavior, the NCS emphasized its dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism.

The agency assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway to scrutinize the incident thoroughly, and appropriate actions will be taken.

“This behaviour is entirely inconsistent with the core values of our service, and we are resolute in maintaining a transparent and accountable customs operation,” the statement declared.

The NCS encouraged passengers and the public to report instances of misconduct or corruption promptly to uphold the integrity of the service.
