The Nigeria Customs Service at Kirikiri Lighter Terminal has intercepted 51.25 kilograms of cannabis indica, worth N256 million, in September.

Customs Area Controller, Joy Edeldouk, revealed this while handing over the seized drugs to officers of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the KLT Command in Apapa, Lagos.

“This act violates the provision of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, Section 55, sub-section 1C and 1F,” Edeldouk stated.

She emphasized that the interception shows the command’s commitment to protecting the nation’s borders from illegal and harmful imports.

“In line with the CGC’s policy thrust of collaboration, consolidation, and innovation, on Wednesday 11th of September, our vigilant officers, working in conjunction with the NDLEA, intercepted a consignment of cannabis indica weighing 51.25kg valued at N256m,” Edeldouk added.

According to Edeldouk, drugs like cannabis indica have serious negative effects on individuals, families, and communities, causing increased crime and violence.

“By keeping these dangerous substances out of our communities, we are preventing untold harm and helping secure a safer future for our citizens, particularly our youths who are most vulnerable to the allure of these harmful substances,” she said.

The drugs and the suspects involved were handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution. Edeldouk assured that the suspects would face the full extent of the law and warned others against trying to smuggle illegal items.

She reiterated the Customs Service’s dedication to protecting the country’s borders, saying, “For those seeking to engage in illegal activities, our message is simple: there is no room for criminality in NCS, and anyone who dares to breach the law of the country will be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Edeldouk also reassured legitimate traders that the service remains committed to supporting lawful trade while cracking down on criminal activities.
