Unidentified gunmen suspected to be members of a cult group reportedly invaded Ikem Community in Etche, Rivers State, resulting in the shooting of six individuals. As of now, there are fears that two of the victims may have lost their lives.
According to Vanguard, the invasion occurred on Tuesday evening, with the assailants engaging in heavy gunfire during the attack.
While precise details about the incident remain somewhat unclear, reports indicate that the cultists unleashed violence on the community, leaving several individuals injured.
Sources from Ikem Community have indicated that efforts were made to seek police intervention, but the situation escalated in the absence of security presence.
The cultists reportedly operated without restraint for over two hours, despite the proximity of a police division merely 10 minutes away.
A community member, requesting anonymity, shared, “My Community Ikem Etche under Okehi Division is on fire; cultists have invaded the place. Six persons shot, two in critical condition.”
Responding to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the District Police Officer in the area has mobilized to assess the situation.
She emphasized that the DPO will provide a comprehensive report following a preliminary investigation.
