Afrobeats star Crayon has paid a poignant tribute to his late mother, marking her posthumous birthday by shaving off his signature dreadlocks in line with family tradition.
The Mavin Records artist, whose real name is Charles Chibueze Chukwu, shared the emotional homage on social media platform X on Tuesday.
He posted before-and-after photos showing his newly shaved head, explaining the act as a cultural gesture of respect. “Happy heavenly birthday mum. Today as your first son and as tradition requires I cut my hair. I hope it shows how much I love, respect and adore you mum,” Crayon wrote.
He expressed the difficulty of coping with her loss, stating, “I miss you everyday – my everything. Words can’t explain how hard today is, it hasn’t been easy navigating this world without you. I promise to make you proud mum. Till we meet again. I love you mum, EVELYN CHUKWU.”
Crayon’s mother, Evelyn Chukwu, died unexpectedly on July 4, 2025, just days before the singer’s own birthday—a period he described at the time as “the darkest day of my life.” Following her passing, he memorialized her as his “soldier, my backbone, my angel and my pillar,” acknowledging her sacrifices during difficult years before his musical success.
She was buried in October 2025, with Crayon delivering a heartfelt eulogy at her funeral where he vowed to care for his siblings and uphold her legacy.
