COVID-19: We sacked three resident doctors, not 30 – Benue State University Teaching Hospital
The Chief Medical Director of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Terrumun Swende on Tuesday said that only three resident doctors were terminated.
The CMD who was reacting to the resident doctors’ claim that 30 doctors were sacked said that the affected resident doctors were sacked upon the one month notice in compliance with directives of the Management Board of the hospital.
Prof. Swende who spoke through a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr. Cephas Hough, said that the residency is a time-bound training program.
He explained that the Residency Training Policy of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, required resident doctors to pass all prescribed examinations within a maximum period of 6 years.
“We did not sack 30 doctors, nothing like that happened in my hospital. Doctors are just hiding under coronavirus pandemic to cause disharmony and draw attention.
“It was only three resident doctors that have their service withdrawn from the hospital following their deficiencies.
“Consequently, all resident doctors whose appointments with the hospital have been terminated have exceeded the prescribed period for the program” the statement read in parts.
The association of Resident Doctors, ARD Benue State Teaching Hospital, BSUTH Makurdi had earlier said that over 30 doctors were sacked by management of the teaching hospital.
The association in earlier statement by Dr Amina Japhet and Dr Sesugh Iorfa, president and the Public Relations Officer respectively described the attitude of the hospital management as illegal which he said contravened
the 2017 Medical Residency Training Act, MRTA.
“The Act allows resident doctors to train and pass all exams over an eight and half to nine year period as against the six(6)years that the management of Benue State University Teaching Hospital wants to impose on resident doctors here.
“The Act also empowers the National Postgraduate Medical College, NPMCN as the only body who can recommend resident doctors for exit from the residency program on the grounds of duration”, the association officials said in their statement.
