Fast-rising Afro-Centric Nigerian Musician, Adegboyega Adeyemi, popularly known as YEGA, spoke with Temitope Adetunji about his artistry works, his passion for music and his experiences in the Music Industry and how COVID_19 affected his musical performance.
How has been your journey into the music industry?
It’s hasn’t been easy. Just like anybody striving for purpose in a certain field, there are good days & there are bad days once you know this giving up is not an option.
My first song was published in 2014; since 2014 – 2020 it’s has been amazing, I’ve learnt so many things, met so many people I never thought I would meet like the President, Vice President, Nobel prize winners. Ministers just to mention a few. I’ve travelled the world all through music. Can’t wait to see what the future holds.
What distinguished you from other musicians?
First, the fact that I can play an instrument, read and write music. After my university education, I went to Tenstrings Music Institute to learn the saxophone and also read music. I don’t just sing, I have full understanding about music.
My versatility also distinguishes me from other musicians. I can make party music & I can also make conscious music.
Which artiste are you looking forward to working with?
I have worked with Mayorkun, Teni, Runtown just to mention a few but I look forward to working with everybody.
How has Covid-19 pandemic affected you as an entertainer?
It has not been easy due to social distancing & staying home. An artist like me whose major revenue comes through shows & touring it’s really been difficult but it has taught me to be creative & find new means to reach the fans. Staying healthy is the main focus now
What is your most embarrassing moment?
When I performed at a Club/lounge called Bogobiri without properly rehearsing with the band. The music was awful, everything was off. The look on the crowd’s face was very discouraging. I wanted to enter the ground.
What is your source of inspiration?
All inspiration comes from a divine source, I’m just a vessel used to give it to the people.
What is your greatest fear?
Fear is not for Man! I have no fears whatsoever.
What’s your advise for up-and-coming artiste?
Stay Hungry. Stay motivated, learn and work on your craft persistently, don’t let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do. Try to project yourself to the people as much as you can. Invest in your brand & the sky will be your starting point.
It’s hasn’t been easy. Just like anybody striving for purpose in a certain field. There are good days and there are bad days once you know this giving up is not an option.
