Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has announced that he will temporarily step away from international football with Belgium until September 2027. This marks a major development in the Courtois Belgium career.
According to AFP, the 34-year-old said he will miss the entire upcoming Nations League campaign. He also plans to make himself available again when Belgium begin their Euro 2028 qualifying campaign next year. This further impacts the Courtois Belgium career trajectory.
Courtois made the last of his 115 appearances for Belgium at this summer’s World Cup. He will not be involved when the Red Devils begin their Nations League campaign against Italy on September 25.
“I have made the choice not to play the entire Nations League campaign with the Red Devils,” Courtois said. He was reflecting on the stage of his Courtois Belgium career.
He, however, left the door open to an emergency return if Belgium suffer major injury problems in goal.
Courtois ready to fight for Belgium place
The goalkeeper’s decision comes after new Belgium coach Mark Van Bommel told him that he could not guarantee him the No. 1 shirt when he eventually returns.
Courtois said he accepts that situation and understands that whoever takes over during the Nations League could strengthen his claim to remain first choice. Importantly, the Courtois Belgium career is defined by constant competition and resilience.
“If the goalkeeper playing in the Nations League performs well, Van Bommel might continue with him,” he said.
“However, I want to fight for my place. I want to prove that I can be the first-choice keeper again.”
Belgium turn to younger options
Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens and Chelsea youngster Mike Penders are among the options available to Van Bommel during Courtois’ absence.
The break will also allow Courtois to focus on his commitments with Real Madrid. This comes after beginning the new season in strong form.
He played a key role in Madrid’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan on Tuesday. Afterwards, he confirmed his decision to step away from Belgium duty.
Courtois stressed that the move is not an international retirement. He still intends to represent Belgium when the Euro 2028 qualifiers begin.
