The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja has made a decision to strike out the case filed by the Allied Peoples Movement against Vice-President Kashim Shettima of the All Progressives Congress over alleged double nomination in the 2023 general elections.

Justice Haruna Tsammani, the panel’s Chairman, delivered the lead judgment and explained that having an invalid nomination or double nomination does not qualify as a reason for disqualification in the presidential election, according to sections 131 and 137 of the constitution.

Furthermore, Justice Tsammani determined that Ibrahim Masari, who was nominated as a placeholder by the APC for the Vice President position, was not a necessary party to the petition because he neither contested nor won the election.

He also ruled that the Allied Peoples Movement’s petition regarding Vice President Kashim Shettima’s alleged multiple nominations is a pre-election matter, and therefore, the Presidential Election Petitions Court lacks jurisdiction.
