The National Industrial Court in Abuja has issued an interim order restraining the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, and three of their officials from embarking on any industrial action or protest in the Federal Capital Territory.
Justice Emmanuel Subilim granted the order on Monday following an ex parte application filed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration.
Also restrained alongside the labour unions are NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, TUC General Secretary Nuhu Toro, and FCT NLC Chairman Stephen Knabayi.
The claimants told the court that despite an earlier interlocutory injunction on January 27 ordering striking FCT workers to resume duty, the NLC and TUC issued directives to sustain the strike and mobilized for a mass protest scheduled for February 3.
They argued that the planned protest could cause a breakdown of law and order, obstruct vehicular movement, and violate the rights of residents.
Justice Subilim directed security agencies to ensure there is no breach of peace in the capital. The court adjourned the matter until February 10 for the hearing of the motion on notice.
FCT administration workers began an indefinite strike on January 19 over unpaid salaries and poor working conditions. The administration had earlier obtained a court order directing the workers to suspend the industrial action.
