Court remands trader for phone theft

A 20-year-old trader, Yusuf Sani, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Grade I Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, for allegedly stealing a cell phone.

The police charged Sani of Gwagwalada, Abuja with joint act, criminal trespass, causing hurt and theft.

The Prosecution Counsel, John Okpa told the court that the complainant, Rita Okafor reported the matter at the Dutse Alhaji Police Station on September 25.

Okpa said that the defendant and three others at large, criminally trespassed the complainant’s shop at Dutse Alhaji and forcefully collected her cell phone valued N25,000.

He said the defendant also collected N45, 000 cash from the complainant and one of his accomplice stabbed her in the back with a knife.

The prosecution counsel added that the complainant spent N4,800 on treatment for the injury sustained.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 79, 348, 247 and 289 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Judge, Mr Muhammad Adamu, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one reasonable surety in like sum.

Adamu ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and present means of identification.

He however adjourned the case until Oct. 25 for hearing.
