A Lebanese, Robert Sanir Antar, has been remanded in the prison custody for allegedly obtaining N10m from two Nigerians under false pretences.
Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered Antar’s remand when he appeared before him on Monday.
In the charge sheet, the police claimed that with intent to defraud the Nigerians – Jonathan Harrison and Bryan Ogboefu – Antar obtained N5m from each of them.
The police claimed that the Lebanese obtained the money from the victims “through the medium of contract and under the pretence to invest the money into furniture business, a representation you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1)(a) and (c) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related Offences Act 2006.”
The prosecution further alleged that between January and March 2019 in Lagos, Antar “did issue cheque in favour of Jonathan Harrison, which was dishonoured when presented on the 3rd of July 2019 due to insufficient fund and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 1(1)(b) of the Dishonoured Cheques (Offences) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
When the charges were read to him, Antar pleaded not guilty.
While adjourning the matter, Justice Oweibo ordered that Antar should be remanded in the prison custody.
