The Lagos State Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu has ordered the prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who gave Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, an injection shortly before his death.

In a ruling delivered by Magistrate C.A. Shotobi, the court said Ogedengbe was not a licensed nurse or qualified medical professional and should not have administered the injection that reportedly led to complications and the singer’s death.

“Pursuant to section 29 of the coroner laws of Lagos State, this court recommends the prosecution of the unlicensed medical personnel, Felicia Ogedengbe, by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence,” the magistrate said.

The court also called attention to the poor regulation in Nigeria’s health sector, which allows unqualified people to operate as health workers.

The coroner further ordered that an investigation be carried out into why the Nigeria Police failed to act on a petition written by Mohbad before his death. The singer had reported threats and assault from Naira Marley and Sam Larry, but no action was taken.

Shotobi noted that the details shared during the inquest showed the police should have done more. She urged the relevant authorities to look into the matter and determine if there was any form of official neglect.

The court also questioned Mohbad’s father for burying his son in a hurry without waiting for an autopsy, and his wife for not taking him to a hospital after he showed signs of illness.

Mohbad, a fast-rising 27-year-old Afrobeats singer, died under unclear circumstances on September 12, 2023. His death sparked anger and protests across Nigeria, with fans demanding answers.
