An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday convicted and sentenced Chinedu Chukwudole to 21 months and 18 days in prison for fraudulently obtaining N50 million under false pretences.

Justice Rahman Oshodi handed down the sentence after Chukwudole pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining money by false pretence filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Oshodi found him guilty on both counts and imposed a custodial sentence of 21 months and 18 days, with an option of a N5 million fine.

During a review of the facts, EFCC counsel Spiff Owede presented one witness and tendered several documents, all of which were admitted as evidence.

According to the anti-graft agency, Chukwudole, in January 2023, obtained N50 million from one Chukwudi Ezeh after claiming he had $70,000 to sell at a rate of N720 per dollar. He later failed to deliver the foreign currency and instead converted the money to personal use.

The prosecution noted that the offences violate Sections 1(1)(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
