A Lagos court has sentenced Mohammed Idris, a supervisor at the Hajj and cargo terminal gate of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, to one year in prison for diverting N11 million.

Justice O.A. Fadipe of the Ikeja Special Offences Court gave the ruling after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission arraigned Idris on a two-count charge.

ICPC counsel, Yvonne Williams-Mbata, told the court that Idris was responsible for handling missing money at the airport but failed to account for N11,234,000 under his supervision between February 2001 and April 2021.

“The investigation revealed that the missing amount was lost under the defendant’s watch,” Williams-Mbata said.

The prosecution stated that the offence was against Sections 26(1)(b) and 25(1) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

Justice Fadipe sentenced Idris to one-year imprisonment on each of the two charges. However, he was given the option to pay a N1 million fine for both counts.

The judge also ordered the convict to be of good behaviour and sign a bond of N2 million with the High Court registry.

“If he fails to meet these conditions, he will serve an additional 10 years in prison,” the court ruled.
