Court halts Kano deputy governor’s bid to stop impeachment

A court has blocked the attempt by Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, to halt impeachment proceedings against him, bringing him closer to losing his position over alleged misconduct.

The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier given Gwarzo a two-week window to respond to allegations, but the period elapsed without any official submission, Majority Leader Husseini Lawan confirmed.

“As I am speaking, there is no response from the Deputy Governor. I confirmed from the Clerk of the House, and there is no communication from his office,” Lawan said.

Although the Assembly accounted for a public holiday and expected a response by Monday or Tuesday, none was received. The lawmakers, currently on recess, are scheduled to reconvene on March 30 to determine the next steps.

“Once we resume, we will confirm whether he responded within the timeframe. If not, we will proceed with the constitutional process, including an investigation of the allegations. If established, impeachment proceedings will follow,” Lawan added.

The court’s decision effectively removes any legal barrier that could have delayed the impeachment process, signaling that Gwarzo now faces an imminent threat to his tenure if the Assembly finds the allegations credible.
